South Downs Explorers MTB Series

This spring and summer join Marmalade MTB in exploring and discovering the South Downs National Park from the saddle of your mountain bike. Kicking off in May the series of sociable monthly guided rides will deliver the best mountain biking across the South Downs. Check out the rides below.

#1 Birling-Gap Bash

The South Downs Explorers series kicks-offs with rolling trails towards cliff top sea views, undulating climbs before endless descents and weaving woodland singletrack. Starting at the far eastern end of the national park with this cracking ride is the perfect introduction to mountain biking on the South Downs.

#2 Tour de Rings

Round two of our South Downs guided MTB rides starts river side in Shoreham By-Sea before taking the gradual climb up past the exclusive Lancing College, that proudly boasts the very impressive and largest school chapel in the world. From here we take in rolling sweet South Downs bridleways and singletrack as we circumnavigate two Iron-Age hill forts with sweeping 360° vistas. There's an option for a quintessentail Sussex village lunch stop, before finishing the ride.

#3 Findon Flyer

Starting with a conveyor tour, west along the South Downs Way from Findon Valley, before dropping into the delightful woodlands of the Angmering Estate on a mixture of bridleways and ridgeline trails. Completing the first part of the loose figure of eight soons delivers a long fast trail, south on open chalkland and down through a forested chute. One last valley-side climb, brings us the perfect end to this mountain bike ride with the long twisting descent back to the meet point.

#4 Slindon Shred

The penultimate mountain bike ride of this series, is all about exploring the ancient downland and woodland trails of the Slindon estate and beyond. We will climb to see epic sea views before rattling down Roman roads and enjoying the quintessential Sussex country-side and the customary pub lunch.

#5 Goodwood2

Wrapping up our summer series of South Downs guided rides, we mesh together what this national park does best. With the Goodwood Estate at the heart of the route, this really is cross-country mountain biking at its best. This part of the South Downs serves up challenging long climbs and flat out descents with the usual epic views as we explore Kingley Vale and the open downland from Cocking.

Are these mountain bike rides for me?
You will be a novice to advanced beginner mountain biker who is looking to experience a new type of terrain and trailYou will be confident in basic bike handling skills and profficient with operating your bicycle in the correct manner
The trails will include features such as roots, small rollable drop-offs and loose small rocks. All of which are rollable
All the trails will have options to ride around features that you do not feel comfortable riding
You have your own suitable mountain bike
The ride does contain a limited number of undulating and moderately steep climbs
You have the personal fitness to ride for at least 2-3 hours at a social and comfortable pace
You are aged 16 and over unless accompanied by an adult also participating on this ride

What do I need for these rides?

(IMPORTANT: your helmet must be within the warranty period from the date of manufacture to take part in any of our guided rides. See the table below. You will be asked to submit this information via our riders consent form)
Clothing & Extras
Clothing & shoes appropriate for cycling and weather conditions on the day
Padded cycling shorts for comfort
Personal choice of drink and a snack or lunch money

* without these you will not be able to take part in the guided ride
Our guides carry an extensive kit to assist with trail-side repairs

Terms & Conditions
Bookings are non-refundable.
Marmalade MTB reserves the right to cancel the guided rides within 24 hours notice due to illness, extreme weather conditions or the minimal number of bookings is not met.
Marmalade MTB will honour your booking (based on availability) if the ride is cancelled or you cannot take part for what ever reason.
The minimum number of bookings required is 4 riders and the maximum number of riders per guided ride is 8 riders.

Our big blue Renault Master is the perfect vehicle to support our sociable guided mountain bike rides on the South Downs and the Surrey Hills. Let's do our bit for the environment and van-share to reduce our carbon footprint. With its 7 passenger seats, separate bike garage, rear USB chargers, table and ample storage our Bike Bus takes the stress and strain out of travelling to the start of our rides.
